Sanchi is a small town. It is situated 46 km north-east of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Sanchi is known for its ancient Buddhist stupas and monasteries, which have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Great Stupa was built during the reign of Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. The stupa is a hemispherical structure made of bricks and covered with stone slabs. It stands at a height of 45 feet and has a diameter of 116 feet. The stupa is surrounded by four gateways, each adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha.

The Monastery Complex consists of several monasteries, temples and shrines. The monasteries were built during the 1st and 2nd centuries CE and were used by Buddhist monks for meditation and study.
